Memorial Day Planning with Lupus

Memorial Day weekend is all about honoring those that have lost their lives serving as part of the US military. Many also feel like the weekend begins the official summer season with friends and family.

Here are some tips to make your Memorial Day weekend both memorable and healthy:

  1. Revamp Your BBQ Game: Instead of loading up on fatty, high salt, processed meats and sugary drinks, enjoy a healthier BBQ! Grill lean meats like chicken or fish, toss on some colorful veggies like asparagus or corn, and whip up a refreshing salad. And for drinks, try jazzing up some water with slices of fruit or opt for unsweetened iced tea. Don't forget to finish off with grilled fruit for a sweet treat!

  2. Get Moving Outdoors: Skip sitting on the outdoor lounge chair all day and plan some outdoor fun! Take a hike, go for a bike ride, or toss around a frisbee. It's a great way to stretch those joints, increase your circulation and spend time with friends. While you may not feel up to an all-day activity - even a 10 minute walk can be great for feeling better in your body!

  3. Snack Smart: Snacking can be part of healthy eating too! Swap out the chips and dip for fresh veggies with hummus or guac. And if you're craving something sweet, enjoy a fruit popsicle. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!

  4. Dive into Water Activities: With many schools out for the summer and the temperatures heating up, it's time to hit the water! Whether it's swimming, kayaking, or just lounging by the pool, make a splash and stay cool while getting some exercise in.

  5. Stay Sun-Savvy: Don't forget the sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially if you're spending lots of time outdoors. Take extra care to protect yourself from those rays as photosensitivity with Lupus can make your symptoms worse.

  6. Plan a Healthy Potluck: If you're heading to a friend's BBQ or picnic, bring along some healthier options to share. Whip up a big salad, bring a fruit platter, or pack some veggie skewers. Your friends will appreciate the variety, and you'll have some delicious and nutritious options to munch on. I just made a delicious bean, corn, avocado, cilantro and lime salad for a BBQ and it was such a hit!

  7. Mindful Eating: While it can be easy to keep on snacking at a party, try to tune in to your body's hunger cues and enjoy your food slowly. Savor each bite and stop when you're satisfied, not stuffed.

With these tips in your back pocket, you can enjoy a Memorial Day weekend that's both fun and help you feel your best, not worse! Cheers to good times and good health!
