Great Ways to Break your Fast with Lupus

Writer's picture: Tanya FreirichTanya Freirich

Living with Lupus does not always mean that the morning is the most pleasant time.

Before I found the diet and lifestyle changes that worked for me, I STRUGGLED the most in the morning. My joint and muscle pain was so awful, that I could barely get dressed let alone prepare my food. I prepped my food the night before knowing I would only feel worse if I didn't eat. My lovely boyfriend at the time would also help me get dressed while he was half asleep - he did so well, I married him ;).

Why is it important?

  1. No one feels great running on empty!

  2. Even if you're not feeling hungry, breakfast is a message to your body to get started for the day and helps your metabolism for the entire day

  3. It's another opportunity to nourish your body!

  4. It's especially important if you take any medications that need to be taken with food

Here are some big picture recommendations for breakfast:

  1. Eat within 1-2 hours of waking

  2. Make sure your meal is a balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates

  3. Bonus points if you can include some vegetables in the AM!

  4. It does not need to be complicated or even particularly big - if you really struggle to eat something - just start small to get something in your stomach

xoxoxo, Happy breakfast everyone!
