This morning was TWENTY SIX DEGREES when I went outside! 26!!!!!!! degrees!!!!! That chill won't stop me from thriving with Lupus though! Here are some great tips to ensure that you feel your best!
We know that Lupus can cause us to overheat easily, but what about in the winter months? Here are some tips to thrive in this weather. Especially if you have Raynaud's - you may need to take extra care!
For those living with lupus, the colder months can present unique challenges. But fear not, warriors, for I come bearing a sleigh-full of tips to help you navigate the winter wonderland with grace and gusto!
Layer Up like a Boss: When it comes to combating the cold, layers are your best friend. But not just any layers—opt for soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or fleece that won't irritate sensitive skin. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep dry, add a cozy insulating layer for warmth, and top it off with a windproof outer layer to shield against those icy gusts. Bonus tip: Don't forget to accessorize with hats, scarves, and gloves to keep extremities snug and stylish! If you have Raynaud's make sure to cover your extremities - and perhaps even use hand/toe warmers in your shoes and gloves/mittens.
2. Stay Hydrated, Inside and Out: As the mercury drops, it's tempting to cozy up with hot cocoa or mulled wine, but don't let hydration take a back seat. Cold air can be deceptively drying, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep skin hydrated and joints lubricated. If cold water is unappealing, try warm or hot water with lemon in a metal insulated cup for the day. And don't skimp on the moisturizer—opt for a rich, hydrating cream to combat dry, flaky skin caused by chilly temps and indoor heating.
3. Mind Your Mood, Sunshine Optional: Winter blues got you feeling down? You're not alone. The shorter days and lack of sunlight can take a toll on mental health, exacerbating symptoms of depression and fatigue. Combat the winter doldrums by maximizing exposure to natural light—take a brisk walk during daylight hours, open curtains to let sunshine in, and consider investing in a light therapy lamp to mimic the effects of sunlight on mood and energy levels. SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is a real thing and can lead to depressed mood in the colder and darker months.
4. Move It or Lose It: When the weather outside is frightful, the temptation to hibernate indoors can be oh-so-real. But staying active is crucial for managing lupus symptoms and maintaining overall health and well-being. Get creative with indoor exercise routines—try yoga, tai chi, or gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility and reduce joint pain. And don't underestimate the power of a dance party in your living room to lift spirits and get those endorphins flowing!
5. Prioritize Self-Care, Snowflakes and All: Last but certainly not least, remember to prioritize self-care amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Listen to your body and honor its needs—whether that means scheduling regular rest breaks, indulging in a luxurious bubble bath, or treating yourself to a cozy night in with a good book and a steaming mug of herbal tea. And don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it—whether it's enlisting a friend to shovel snow or delegating tasks to lighten your load on a low energy day.
So there you have it, fellow lupus warriors—five tips to help you thrive in the winter months and emerge victorious in the battle against the cold. With a little preparation, a dash of positivity, and a whole lot of self-love, you'll be sleighing the winter season like a true ice queen. Stay warm, stay well, and above all, stay amazing!
